Erika Ranee and I met in 2009 at a residency. We are in each others’ “pledge class,'“ informed by the same time and space of young ascendant “art stars.” She will always be one of mine. Her work is explosive and bright and nuanced all at the same time. She had just begun making work again after a long pause when we met. I had no idea that I’d have three kids in the next 5 years after our time together, and I even got to show her work in my pop-up garage/studio DADU (2016).
